Kssssssssssssssssssss…
Welcome, mother/daughter/father/son/step-uncle & great-great-grandparent-twice-removed-fuckers, to the Music vs. Noise Edition of Monday Morning Aural Fuckin’ Sex! This edition is going to be pretty different from everything that I’ve put out so far this year. We’re (at least, temporarily) going back to the old format of playing blocks of songs and then talking about them. Why? Because the question of music vs. noise is an interesting one to me.
Of course, it’s all subjective. That’s part of why it interests me. One man’s music is another man’s noise, and it’s soundly logical, hehe. What’s even more interesting to me, however, is that all music IS noise, and all noise is music. Allow me to elaborate. Music is literally a series of carefully coordinated, (often) meticulously arranged disturbances of the equilibrium of air pressure. To be frank, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere outside of an anechoic chamber that’s at total air pressure equilibrium. If you don’t know what an anechoic chamber is, look it up! It’s a really rather extraordinary setup where they design and/or treat the walls with thick sound absorption materials that are mostly foam, but can be other things as well.
Anyway, these disturbances of air pressure equilibrium which we know as music, we have all decided (largely subconsciously, I might add) that they’re significant to us for whatever reason. That’s a whole other fascinating topic in my opinion, but we won’t delve too far down that particular rabbit hole. Basically, think about how songs composed in major keys generally evoke positive emotions, whereas minor keys generally evoke negative ones. You can get a sense of sadness or joy just based on some instrumental piece composed in a major or minor key. Where does that come from? Our minds are immensely interesting things, and I think we all should be doing more to learn about their inner workings.
So anyway, the way this edition is going to proceed, we’ll be listening to blocks of various genres that are mostly all grouped together due to similarity, although I’ve sprinkled in some mystery genre tracks. Mystery in that I have no damn idea how to classify them with a genre. Maybe someone else out there knows, but I don’t. Also, after each block, my roommate Josh, our friend Sarina and I will discuss the tracks and whether we felt like they were music or noise. Noise, in this case, being something that really just doesn’t add anything to your life, good, bad or otherwise.
With that explained and done, let’s kick it off properly with a group from an actual genre of music called Noise. Or No-Wave, whatever the fuck that means. Yojne!!
