2023-02-06 (Black Lives Matter Edition Vol. 5)

The fuck what up is, perverts?! Emo-muthafuckin’-clew to the Black Lives Matter Edition Vol. 5! That’s fuckin’ right, I still stand with the movement even if it ends up being proven that one of the leaders was corrupt. Should go without saying, but a movement is obviously about far more than a single person, and we all know the saying, “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Also, the comment from Patrisse Cullors about “white guilt,” is likely very true. I don’t take offense anymore than I would take responsibility for the actions of other white people. I have little doubt in my mind that was indeed a major motivating factor in BLM receiving the massive influx it got after George Floyd, but I have been doing whatever I can to level the playing field for decades, using my undeserved white privilege for good however possible over the years.

 

Truly, the contributions to my life from people of color are so plentiful and so cherished, my life wouldn’t be recognizable without them. The very least I can do is stand by their side in times of crisis, and listen more than speak; pretty sure white folk have had more than enough time to speak over the fucking millennia. To that end, this intro will be shorter than my typical fuckin’ Tolstoys. I will say that compiling these editions is not only easy, it’s easy, breezy, fuckin’ beautiful like Cover Girl n’ shit. It’s so fulfilling delving into the most often magnificent work of black artists, and it’s somethin’ ya never realize if you never step outside your bubble. Unfortunately, part of what it means to live in a bubble is that people don’t realize it, and it’s usually not enough to be told you are; you have to realize it for yourself somehow.

 

In case it’s not obvious, two reasons I’m making this edition: 1. It’s Black History Month, and 2. Tyre Nichols. I honestly didn’t want to watch the full video. I know what happens in it, I know it’s fuckin’ terrible, and I’m acting accordingly however I can. I never stopped. This podcast is part of that action, even though I freely acknowledge that my platform is small. Real quick before I wrap here, I want to make two special mentions. The track Sunny by Boney M., the original by Bobby Hebb, there are so many versions of that song by legendary and indie artists alike, and they’re all fuckin’ beautiful. It’s wild to me that the original wasn’t even written about anyone bearing that name, but about having a sunny disposition over a negative one. Also, you might notice two tracks by artists named Sunny Rae on the list: much to my dismay, they have nothing to do with the Sunny Rae I knew and loved. I wish I had recordings of her singing or playing music, but alas… However, ain’t nothin’ stoppin’ us from appreciating other artists with that name, especially when they fit the theme of this edition. Pretty sure they’re different artists considering one’s jazz piano and the other’s hip-hop, but who knows?
